Watching Shakespeare and Relishing the Moments

I never would have dreamed of reading Shakespeare to my kids when they were so young. My call to homeschooling and delving into the beauty of living books, has opened them (and me) up to a wide range of ideas, authors, and a taste for great literature, not to mention a love of history and science.

I’m pretty sure I had never seen or heard any Shakespeare until I was in high-school. My son however has been listening to me read Shakespeare (and has read a bit on his own), for a few years now.

He’s seven. Almost half of the age I believe I was when I was exposed to the Bard.

Homeschool In the Woods – Lap Booking Made Easy – Make-A-State Activity Review

Homeschool In the Woods – Lap Booking Made Easy – Make-A-State Activity Review

My kids love geography. It’s actually something they beg for each day. This year we have been studying the United States, one state per week. We have almost finished each of the individual states and my kids will soon be picking a few states for an in depth report and presentation. One way I am considering doing these reports is through a more hands on approach with lap booking.

Homeschool In the Woods - Make a State Activity Review - Modern Momma Musings

Lap booking is a great interactive way to place the facts about a topic into a contained report. Home School in the Woods is a great resource for many different lap book projects, and we were lucky enough to review their Make-a-State Activity which is part of their Activity-Paks series.

Confidence Boost – Science for Every Teacher Review

Confidence Boost – Science for Every Teacher Review

I love science, but I don’t feel I understand it enough to teach it well. Luckily, my kids are still young so I have a bit of time to start digging deeper before the big chemistry, physics etc., will need to be taught. Knowing my lack of understanding has led me to begin reading and learning on my own now; so that I am prepared when we hit the big science topics. Novare Science & Math offer a multitude of science books and I was lucky enough to have the chance to review Science for Every Teacher.

Science for Every Teacher Review - Modern Momma Musings

Science for Every Teacher was written to help all of us that are not quite as confident in teaching science as we would prefer. The book leads the teacher into a better understanding of Physics, starting with Scientific Knowledge, through a multitude of topics ranging from atoms, momentum and simple machines, to pressure and buoyancy and geometric optics. The great thing about the book is that you could read it through, then reference it again and again while you are teaching specific topics. Novare Science for Every Teacher

The chapters have a list of goals and a quick synopsis of the chapter, before the chapter itself begins. This gives a good overview of what you will be learning during that section. I thought the chapters were written in an easy to understand way, the pulled block quotes, definitions, tables, figures and examples were very helpful in my understanding of the topic. I also loved that the chapter ended with an “Ideas for your classroom” section. This will be very helpful when we begin studying these topics in our classroom, as I am always looking for fun ways to incorporate new topics.

Science for Every Teacher Review - Modern Momma Musings

While I haven’t had a good chance to test the information I’ve read in the book with my teaching skills, I have found that I am noticing things in my day-to-day life that I can understand much better. While I remember learning a lot of the information that is discussed in the book, there are so many things I had forgotten or had never truly understood. I have found that the explanations, examples and figures have been very helpful with my understanding of these ideas.

I would definitely recommend Science for Every Teacher to anyone who wants to get a better grasp on the topics they will be covering in their Physics classroom. It is a great refresher and a way to get you started on your understanding so that you can pass that onto your students. It will be a great addition to the books we will be using in the later years of our homeschooling journey. I plan to keep it within reach throughout, so that I can reference it quickly, when any questions arise.

If you are past physics, you’ll be happy to know that they are working on books for Chemistry and Earth Science now. In the meantime, Novare Science & Math has some other great resources for Earth Science, Introductory Physics, General Chemistry and more. Their teachers resources section has many great books and tools for helping you teach science in a way that your students will understand, because you understand!

Novare Science & Math
My next purchase will be the Teaching Science so that Students Learn Science book and I am excited to add the additional titles of the Science for Every Teacher series as they become available.

Braving History with Rush Limbaugh – Rush Revere Series Review

Braving History with Rush Limbaugh – Rush Revere Series Review

In years past I have listened to a lot of Rush Limbaugh. I didn’t always agree with him, but I appreciate his strong opinion and how he can push me to think through the things I believe to gain a better understanding.

I remember when he began the Adventures of Rush Revere Book Series. At the time my kids were only 5 and 3 so I knew it would be a while before they were something they could dig into. Imagine my excitement when I was given the chance to review the Adventures of Rush Revere #1 New York Times Bestselling Book Series by Rush and Kathryn Adams Limbaugh this year!

Taking a New Approach to Latin – Memoria Press Review – Latina Christiana Complete Set

Taking a New Approach to Latin – Memoria Press Review – Latina Christiana Complete Set

Latin was a subject I would have never thought to teach my children, but then again I never thought I would be homeschooling my children in the first place. Funny how life throws some amazing curve balls. Once I began thinking about homeschooling and doing research, I quickly saw how Latin takes a part in our everyday lives. We’ve done two years of Latin now, finished a program, and were ready to move onto a more advanced Latin program, this year. For this reason, I was excited to have a chance to review Latina Christiana Complete Set from Memoria Press.

Reading About Our Heroes – Heroes of History Review

History is all about digging a little deeper. One of the ways we love to do this is with a good book. One great resource for these historical biographies is Heroes of History from YWAM Publishing. We had the pleasure of reviewing Heroes of History- William Bradford and it was a wonderful addition to our Ambleside Online Year 3 studies of the Pilgrims. Read more

Preparing for the Week Ahead – Ambleside Online Year 3

Preparing for the Week Ahead – Ambleside Online Year 3

A few months ago, we ended our Ambleside Online Year 2 studies. After a few weeks off, we began Year 3 slowly. While we do homeschool year round, through the spring and summer we take it a bit slower to enjoy the weather and fun activities. What would normally take one week we are doing over two. This allows us a lot of extra time to enjoy a bit of a break and still have a structure in our days.

This year has also given us a chance to slowly transition into more independent work for both kiddos. At seven and eight years old they are both proficient readers. This slower pace is a great way to let them take on more of the readings themselves.

This is a great transition, but it does take a bit more work on my end in preparing Ambleside for the week.
