Pencil Grips and Safety Scissors Review – Perfect for Toddlers and Preschoolers

I have a very independent toddler. One that wants to do everything her big sister and brother are doing. So it is nice to have items that help her do these things properly and safely. This is why I was excited to review The 3 Step Pencil Grip Training Kit and The Ultra Safe Safety Scissors from The Pencil Grip, Inc..

About The 3 Step Pencil Grip Training Kit

The 3 Step Pencil Grip Training Kit

Most of us know that a child needs to strengthen their finger and hand muscles in order to hold a pencil correctly. But sometimes, even after these muscles have been strengthened, they still have a hard time getting their hand wrapped correctly around a pencil.

The 3 Step Pencil Grip Training Kit is exactly what it sounds like, three different pencil grips to help train your child’s hand slowly but steadily into the correct grip.

Starting with the crossover grip, the child’s fingers are placed in the grip which holds them in the correct position but does not allow the fingers to crossover while writing.

The next step in the progression is the pinch grip. This grip is the transitional grip which holds their hands in the correct position but without the wings of the crossover grip.

The last grip is the pencil grip. This grip holds their hand in the correct position and allows them more control.

One of the great things about the The 3 Step Pencil Grip Training Kit is that it can be used for both kids and adults. Not only does it help with the proper grip, it also reduces hand fatigue and pain. And it can be used by both right and left handed writers, which means it’s easy to use with your whole family or class.

About the Ultra Safe Safety Scissors

The Ultra Safe Safety Scissors

Scissors can be a scary thing to let your children begin using if you don’t have a safe set. The Ultra Safe Safety Scissors take scissor safety to the next level. The safety scissors have a plastic shield over the top of the scissors allowing them to be sharp, but protect the child’s hands. The end is blunt so poking should not be an issue either. Because the shield protects the child’s fingers from the scissors they can also be a bit sharper which allows them to cut through paper better than a normal set of children’s scissors.

How We Used the Pencil Grip Training Kit and the Safety Scissors

Somehow, Sugar Plum was born with an pencil grip that rivals that of a 5 year old. I am not sure if it’s from watching her older siblings or just a natural gift. And because she’s only 2 years old, I wasn’t feeling that she needed the grips just yet.

I do however have a good friend whose daughter has trouble holding her pencils correctly. They had tried a few different grips but nothing with a three step process. She was impressed by the way they worked with her daughter and loved that the she could progress through the different grips to help with her daughter’s grip slowly and steadily.

The scissors however, I knew Sugar Plum would be interested in using. She has been very interested in cutting and writing so she was excited to get a new pair of scissors to use on her work.

The first thing she did was grab her old scissors and compare the two. Once she had done her comparison she seemed ready to try the new pair out on her work. She is still trying to figure out the way to hold scissors and it seemed like the shield was throwing her off a bit. But after helping her get her hands and paper ready, she had no problem cutting. In fact theThe Ultra Safe Safety Scissors seemed to work better than her previous scissors.

Our Impression

After talking with my friend who used The 3 Step Pencil Grip Training Kit with her daughter, I am excited to use the pencil grips with Sugar Plum as she gets closer to writing age. I am sure, even if she doesn’t truly need them for actual placement, they will make the time she is working on writing, more comfortable.

In truth, I may even steal the pencil grip for my pencils and pens since hand fatigue and pain is definitely something I deal with when writing for longer periods of time.

As for the scissors, I love having The Ultra Safe Safety Scissors around for Sugar Plum. This allows me to have a bit more peace of mind when she is working on her art projects on her own. She had no trouble using them and they cut better than her previous scissors so she was less frustrated and used them for a longer period of time.
