I have a love hate relationship with craft projects. I love giving my kids the freedom to create, I hate the mess it creates. My kids however, have only a love relationship with crafts and for this reason I am always looking for new ways to expand their craftiness. Rigid Wrap and CelluClay Quik-Sculpting Kit from ACTÍVA Products is another addition to our craft supply cabinet.
I must say, my anxiety was a on overload as I opened the box of clay and wrap and dust was the first thing I encountered. But I took a deep breath and began to unwrap the package and get the supplies ready.
Two trays, two bowls of warm water, two sets of rigid wrap, two pairs of scissors and a few paper towels and we were ready to get started on the project.
The kids had so much fun figuring out what they were going to make and how they were going to accomplish their project.
Both decided to do totem poles, but did not want to use the clay, they just wanted to use the wrap. This made their projects a bit less dimensional, but they still had a lot of fun building up the wrap to add thickness. I was pleasantly surprised at how little mess they made in this process and even the bit of mess they had, was easy to clean up with a rag and water.
The rigid wrap was easy to work with, very similar to doing paper-mache, but an all in one option. I loved that it dried quickly, but was still workable if water was added to the wrap material again.
Both kids spent about 30 minutes creating the sculpture and then we let them dry overnight, however it probably would have been ready to paint much sooner than that, our schedule just worked out better to split it into two days.
The next day they began painting their projects. They had a blast and the acrylic paints we used popped in color on their sculptures. After the paint had dried they were finished.
Because we let the projects dry on our trays, I was convinced that I was going to be scraping the dried mixture off the trays when they were finished. I was blown away by how easily it came off with some water and my hands. It was quick and easy!
I will definitely be pulling this out for more projects. I am excited to try the clay in addition to the rigid wrap for our next craft.
I can see the Rigid Wrap and CelluClay Quik-Sculpting Kit being used for both homeschooling families, parents wanting a fun craft time project, school projects and even adults looking to add a new material to their crafting designs. There are so many projects that you can do from bowls to jewelry and everywhere in between. They even have a great project idea book, ACTÍVA Products’ Favorite Sculpture KIDS CRAFTS to get you started.
