Sometimes a book hits you in the heart and pulls you in. This is how I felt about the beautiful book written by Ron Fournier, Love That Boy.
My kids love geography. It’s actually something they beg for each day. This year we have been studying the United States, one state per week. We have almost finished each of the individual states and my kids will soon be picking a few states for an in depth report and presentation. One way I am considering doing these reports is through a more hands on approach with lap booking.
Lap booking is a great interactive way to place the facts about a topic into a contained report. Home School in the Woods is a great resource for many different lap book projects, and we were lucky enough to review their Make-a-State Activity which is part of their Activity-Paks series.
I love science, but I don’t feel I understand it enough to teach it well. Luckily, my kids are still young so I have a bit of time to start digging deeper before the big chemistry, physics etc., will need to be taught. Knowing my lack of understanding has led me to begin reading and learning on my own now; so that I am prepared when we hit the big science topics. Novare Science & Math offer a multitude of science books and I was lucky enough to have the chance to review Science for Every Teacher.
The chapters have a list of goals and a quick synopsis of the chapter, before the chapter itself begins. This gives a good overview of what you will be learning during that section. I thought the chapters were written in an easy to understand way, the pulled block quotes, definitions, tables, figures and examples were very helpful in my understanding of the topic. I also loved that the chapter ended with an “Ideas for your classroom” section. This will be very helpful when we begin studying these topics in our classroom, as I am always looking for fun ways to incorporate new topics.
While I haven’t had a good chance to test the information I’ve read in the book with my teaching skills, I have found that I am noticing things in my day-to-day life that I can understand much better. While I remember learning a lot of the information that is discussed in the book, there are so many things I had forgotten or had never truly understood. I have found that the explanations, examples and figures have been very helpful with my understanding of these ideas.
I would definitely recommend Science for Every Teacher to anyone who wants to get a better grasp on the topics they will be covering in their Physics classroom. It is a great refresher and a way to get you started on your understanding so that you can pass that onto your students. It will be a great addition to the books we will be using in the later years of our homeschooling journey. I plan to keep it within reach throughout, so that I can reference it quickly, when any questions arise.
If you are past physics, you’ll be happy to know that they are working on books for Chemistry and Earth Science now. In the meantime, Novare Science & Math has some other great resources for Earth Science, Introductory Physics, General Chemistry and more. Their teachers resources section has many great books and tools for helping you teach science in a way that your students will understand, because you understand!
Our review crew had the chance to review many of Novare Science & Math offerings. You can check out their reviews here:
In years past I have listened to a lot of Rush Limbaugh. I didn’t always agree with him, but I appreciate his strong opinion and how he can push me to think through the things I believe to gain a better understanding.
I remember when he began the Adventures of Rush Revere Book Series. At the time my kids were only 5 and 3 so I knew it would be a while before they were something they could dig into. Imagine my excitement when I was given the chance to review the Adventures of Rush Revere #1 New York Times Bestselling Book Series by Rush and Kathryn Adams Limbaugh this year!
History is all about digging a little deeper. One of the ways we love to do this is with a good book. One great resource for these historical biographies is Heroes of History from YWAM Publishing. We had the pleasure of reviewing Heroes of History- William Bradford and it was a wonderful addition to our Ambleside Online Year 3 studies of the Pilgrims. Read more
Painting can be extremely messy!
We host a bi-weekly art co-op at our house with some homeschooling friends. There are six kids ranging from two to eight years old. The older five kids do a pretty good job of following the instructions and not making a huge mess, but my rambunctious two year old is another story!
We are book lovers around here. There is not a room in our house that does not have a book in it… literally, even the bathrooms. Adding books to our collection is a constant thing. Which is why I was excited that we were given the opportunity to review the book I’d Rather Be Your Mommy by Home School Adventure Co..
Being Charlotte Mason homeschoolers, language arts is said to be included in the dictation part of our day. However, in making our homeschool work best for myself and more importantly our kids, I have added in a bit of grammar and language arts along the way. Because I believe in having a bit of a deeper look into language arts I was excited to review Eclectic Foundations Language Arts Level C.
