This month we are working on colors, letters and a bit of play dough with our Tot School time.
Sugar Plum is beginning to repeat the ABC song with me. Chiming in on a few letters and mouthing the rest. It’s pretty adorable. Unfortunately, she won’t do it on camera so I have nothing to show you so you’ll just have to trust me!
To reinforce the letters we are saying Santa brought her a placemat with the alphabet. So we say them at breakfast and lunch to practice and she will look at the placemat and say “ABC.” Progress!
We also are using flashcards, although she doesn’t sit with these much more than to pull them out and put them back in the box. She will listen to a few letters, I think I may end up pulling out only a few letters and putting them in a container instead, but for now she is enjoying the pull out – put in process. So we’ll just say she’s working on small motor skills 😉
She is also loving colors right now. We have been telling her colors for what seems like forever, but she is now starting to somewhat grasp that they are all different and which is which.
I’ve put a few things on her shelves to help us explore color.
The look and find color cards are amazing! I printed these and laminated them. She loves to pull out a card and find the objects.
We also have a color sorting tray. I put this together with a 6 cup muffin pan. I printed and laminated the cards from Homeschool Creations (2 pages per printed page) and put one color for each spot. The other cards are in the container which for lack of space, sits on top of the muffin pan. She has only done this a few times so far. In watching her play, I think there might be too many colored items to sort through so I am thinking about narrowing it down to two items per color and working with those, then adding in a few more if she seems ready. I’m giving her a few more times of working with the setup as it is before I make any changes.
This color wheel and clothespin toy was from the dollar section at Target. I am loving this and so is Sugar Plum. She loves to look at the wheel and we are pointing at the colors and she is starting to explore the clothespins. I think they are a bit hard for her to open right now, but that doesn’t keep her from trying!
We also started using do-a-dot markers. She had so much fun making her dotted mitten from 3 Dinosaurs. This will be coming out often!
We also colored the penguins with specific colors. This was a bit harder for Sugar Plum, understandably. I plan to do this again, but print and cut the penguins out so they are all seperated. Then she can go at coloring the color needed without the temptation and confusion of the other colored penguins.
Some of the other things she is loving right now are books, stacking blocks and play dough.
Santa brought a block puzzle for Christmas which has been transformed into a stacking toy. She gets so excited when she stacks the blocks higher than herself!
Play dough is a favorite in our home and Sugar Plum has taken to it as well. She uses play dough multiple times a day. The cookie cutters and scissors from her Melissa and Doug set are her favorite tools in the play dough tray at the moment. But she is also content just pulling it apart and putting it back to together. It’s all about the little things!
There are random other things around the house she is playing a lot with, but these are the things that I have planned for her daily uses.
