We are finally hitting a stride in math and things are beginning to click. Addition, subtraction and multiplication facts are all getting memorized in fun ways, but what better way to practice those facts then to think outside the box with a math game. Sunya – The Magic and Wonder of Math and Science Adding & Subtracting is a new card game from Sunya Publishing that makes math a fun out-of-the-box adventure.
Sunya comes with instructions, number line and two card decks. One deck contains number cards, wild cards and operation cards (+, -, =). The other deck contains riddles. As far as I can tell, the riddle cards are just a fun extra, they are not part of the game itself.
After reading the instructions, I was a bit confused, I could figure out the basic play, but the extra set of cards and the multi-page instructions, made the game seem very difficult. There was a lot of information to take in for a card game, and I was worried the kids and I would be lost, before we even began. After reading the instructions a few times, I began to understand the basic play rules, I decided the only way to learn was going to be by playing the game and figuring it out as we went. This proved to be a good idea. While I started out overwhelmed, it was actually quite easy to play and the kids and I had no problems.
My advice – don’t overthink the instructions – just play and answer any questions that may come up with the instructions.
To play Sunya, you set up an addition or subtraction operation, it can be any operation as long as it works (4+5=9, 9-3=6, etc). Each player is then dealt 4 cards. The object of the game is to use the cards in your hand to create a new operation. The first player to use all their cards says “Sunya” and wins the game. Sunshine and Mister Man both loved the game and continued playing multiple times, multiple days. The great thing is there are multiple variations to the game which will keep it fun and exciting. My kids were happy just playing the basic game which says something about how fun it was for them!
After playing the game, Mister Man had fun reading the riddle cards. He is my joke lover, and these were right up his alley. He has been telling the jokes to family and friends and loves the response of wonder he receives as they try to figure out the answers.
I was disappointed that there is no box for the game, making it hard to store (this may be something they are working on for final production). I ended up putting rubber bands on the card decks and setting it all in our game cabinet, but I will have to find a better option, as I am pretty sure some of the cards will end up missing and torn up the way it is now.
Sunya – The Magic and Wonder of Math and Science Adding & Subtracting has been a fun game for our family and I am excited to continue playing with the kids. We love adding in math games to review and just take a break from the normal routine, I am sure it will be played many times over the summer months especially.
