Typing Up a Storm – Typing Coach Review

When I was growing up, typing was not taught until fifth grade, but that was many years ago. Today, kids need to begin typing much earlier. When the opportunity to review The Typing Coach Online Typing Course provided by The Typing Coach came up, I was excited to try it out.

The Typing Coach
The Typing Coach Online Typing Course is an online audio program with the practice being done with a printed pdf and Microsoft Word or similar program.

The Typing Coach
The first thing I did was watch the informational video and print the student packet. Then I familiarized myself with the site.

Once I knew how to work the program and what to expect, I had my kids try the program. They were a bit confused to begin with, but it didn’t take long before they were listening, practicing and working on their typing skills.

They began by listening to the audio file. Then they began their practice. They have done a few typing programs before, so they did not have many issues with the practice sheets. Their biggest problem was getting used to typing from a sheet of paper and not from the screen.

After the practice lessons were completed without errors they took their tests. My kids needed to take do the practice lesson a few times before moving on to the tests, but they were making only a few errors each time. They definitely took their time and concentrated on what they were doing. I believe the lack of colors, sounds and all the extras present in many other programs, helped them to concentrate on the work at hand. Covering the monitor and not being able to see your work can be daunting, but after taking the first lesson they had a better idea of what to expect and it was not as difficult in later lessons and tests.

One of the major differences between The Typing Coach Online Typing Course and other programs we have used was the printed sheets for practice. Instead of the letters showing on the screen, you place the printed sheet next to your student and they type from the sheet, much like you would do in everyday situations. I liked this process, but it did take some getting used to by the kids. After they figured it all out, they had no problem doing the work.

Overall, I think The Typing Coach Online Typing Course was a beneficial typing course. My kids still enjoy the other typing programs we use, because they are more engaging than the Typing Coach. That being said, I think The Typing Coach Online Typing Course was very helpful in teaching them to type while looking at a paper and not at their screen. Because I feel there is a definite need for this practice as well, I plan to continue using The Typing Coach in addition to our other programs so that they are doing both and getting extra practice.
